Holmes spins Uplyme 2nds to victory over Kilmington 2nds

Uplyme 2nds took advantage of a rare change of ‘home’ scenery to claim a third win of the league campaign with a four wicket win over Kilmington 2nds.

Owing to it being the annual Uplyme Village Fete the game was moved to Chardstock CC.

Both sides contained a number of veteran players in their ranks reflecting on what a good game it would have been twenty years ago!

Nevertheless they all rolled back the years and produced a competitive and enjoyable game of cricket.

Kilmington openers Baker and Huscroft opened the innings and continued in the same vein as the previous weeks by putting together an opening stand of 78. The break through came when Rod Rowe, playing his first game for two years, had Baker caught by Rod Holmes and is often the case Huscroft followed two runs later well bowled by Jack Lamb Wilson.

Skipper Holmes then introduced off-spinner Daley Holmes to the attack and he had immediate success when he bowled Kilmington skipper Ash Cook. Holmes found the Chardstock pitch to his liking as he utilized the slope to spin the ball into the right-handers taking a further four wickets for 36 in his nine over spell.

However, Kilmington fought back and Jon Tattershall, with 36, and Tom Olive, 34 not out, both batted well in a 50-run partnership and with some lusty hitting from Charlie Potter 17; the visitors boosted their score to a respectable 189-7.

Uplyme started the run chase positively, but three wickets fell with the score on 28 to the wily David Lavender and pace bowler Potter. However, a fine knock of 71 from Tim Daniel, ably supported by Paddy Barraclough, with 20, revived the innings.

When Daniel was out caught by Tattershall the damage had been done and it was left to the experience pair of Derek Wellman, 18 not out, and Rodney Holmes, 13 not out, to see Uplyme over the line for their third win of the season.
