Somerset’s Nick Compton made his debut in the first Test against India at the Sardar Patel Stadium on Thursday.

England, as expected, named Compton to open the batting alongside new captain Alastair Cook.

The pair would have to wait for their chance to impress, however, after India won a crucial toss and inevitably chose to bat first on a dry pitch expected to increasingly favour spin.

England unsurprisingly named Tim Bresnan as their third seamer, in a predictable line-up also containing Stuart Broad following his recovery from a bruised heel.

India went into the game with two specialist spinners in Ravichandran Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha, which could well prove to be the decisive factor in this first of three Test matches as day one ended with the hosts a dominant 323-4.

Spinner Graham Swan was the only England bowler to claim wickets – taking all four for 85 runs having bowled 32 of the day’s 90 overs.

The teams: India: MS Dhoni (Capt.), Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Cheteshwar Pujara, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, R Ashwin, Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav, Pragyan Ojha.
