Archant

Uplyme were beaten by eight wickets on their visit to Filleigh for a D Division fixture.

After losing three of their first four games this term to the weather simply getting some action was a major achievement!

Their trip to North Devon was made all the harder following the late withdrawal of the Whittington brothers from their line up. Youngsters Alfie Bellworthy and Tyler Wellman stepped up from the second eleven to replace them.

With damp wickets the order of the day across the county the contest was always going to be determined by the flip of the coin and, as soon as the home skipper called correctly he had no hesitation in inviting the visiting side to bat first!

Uplyme found themselves facing the rapid pace of Zimbabwean Mbofana on a drying wicket. He tied up one end whilst wickets fell at the other. Only Nick Dinnison (24) and Mark Brimicombe (25) were able to offer any form of resistance.

From a troubled 77-8 the tail wagged sufficiently with bowler Paddy Barraclough hitting 118 to secure a batting point as the innings closed on 113.

Uplyme needed to take early wickets and their spirits were lifted when young bowler Rhys Davies had Mbofana well caught by Barraclough with the score on 18. However, opener Harrison and number three Henry dug in and took the score to 86 before skipper Steve Batey bowled Henry. That was to be the celebratory act of the day for Uplyme as the home side finished the job off to secure a comfortable victory.

On Saturday Uplyme, who sit sixth in the table, host a Seaton side that sit three points and one place better off.
