Acland Park played witness to a thrilling East Devon derby which could have gone either way before the home side sealed victory with 10 minutes to play.

The Blues raced into a two goal lead with David O’Connor and Charlie Selley putting them in charge. At that stage it looked set to be a one-sided affair. However, Beer boss Phil Crabb had other ideas, threw caution to the wind playing four strikers and goals from Adam Wakeley, Richard Walker and a superb volley fro Chris Long turned the game on it’s head for Beer to lead 3-2. Then disaster struck for the Fishermen with a hamstring injury denying them the services of goal threat Walker. Feniton levelled through Ali Sawer’s late first half goal and it was the home dressing room probably the more contented at the break. The second half saw Beer have to re-shuffle to compensate for the Walker loss while the home team kept probing looking for the match winning goal. It arrived with ten minutes to play with Paul Dowling finding the back of the net.

Blues boss Mark Kingdon said: “It was a great game, one for the neutral, not the coach! Beer were superb in the way they battled back though from my point of view much of that was down to us sitting off them. Words were exchanged at the break and we looked much better in the second half and I felt we deserved to win.”

Beer boss Phil Crabb said: “Losing Richard (Walker) did not help our cause, but I am delighted with what my lads gave. If we continue that sort of level of commitment we’ll end in a safe enough berth this season.”

On Saturday Feniton lock horns again with Seaton Town who dumped them nut of the East Devon senior Cup recently. After the trip to Colyford Road the Blues play two of then bottom four.

Kingdom says: “The fact that a win at Seaton can take us back to the top should be the only motivation we require.”

Beer travel to third bottom Clyst Valley where a win would put the Fishermen ten points clear of the relegation places.

Crabb says: “This is a huge game in terms of the bigger picture. If we can bank the three points it will save us a lot of worry over the remaining matches.”
