Dunkeswell Bowls Club is most certainly alive and kicking and its general health has dramatically improved, thanks to a little help from the Midweek Herald, writes Steve Birley.

After a report on how the club were desperate for new members was published the club were delighted that well over 30 new faces attended the 2014 Open Day.

The Dunks Tom Williams said: “We really were both surprised and highly delighted with the turnout. Not only did we get numbers that exceeded our hopes we also signed up a number of new members – and some jolly decent bowlers too!”

The club has also begun its new season of matches. After losing their first Over-60s League match 40-20 to Heavitree the team bounced back to defeat Phear Park 40-28 with the top Dunkeswell rink being that of Tom Williams, Tony Thorne and Brian Long.

The first of the season’s friendly matches saw Dunkeswell host Chard and this saw a 65-59 home win with the top performing rink being that of Brab Hallows, Iris Long and Mick Stokes.
