An Ironman Triathlon is a daunting prospect as it tests anyone who takes on the feat both physically and mentally to the maximum, writes Dennis Elliott.

Two point four miles of swimming followed by 112 miles of cycling and, last but not least, a 26.2-mile marathon run all the events contested one after the other!

East Devon’s N1 Tri Club is thriving on the back of participating in the ‘fastest growing sport in the world’.

Next Sunday, in the beautiful Danish City of Copenhagen two of the 2800 athletes on the start line will be proudly carrying the colours of the N1 Club, united in a common goal.

Father and son team Dennis and Tom Elliott are looking forward to their race but, thanks to the help of their friends and club mates who have sponsored them if they complete their challenge, a young man from Exmouth will receive a life changing gift.

Louis Watts is seven-years old and has Downs syndrome. His four brothers and sisters together with his mother and father, are determined to help Louis live a full life and cycling is a family favourite activity.

As Louis has some disabilities a conventional bike will not work for him and he needs a special support trike that comes at a significant cost-hence the fundraising.

Tom Elliott is an fine athlete, but this will be his first Ironman race.

Dad, Dennis, is, by his own admission, well past his athletic best, but he intends embracing the day and the whole experience .

Perhaps next Sunday you will spare a moment to think of these two men on their long journey united in their quest to get ‘Louis on his bike’!
