The second round of the Scratch and Handicap Challenge was played at East Devon on Saturday, writes Paul Willoughby.

Last week’s weather was awful so all credit to those who finished both rounds. However the conditions on Saturday were as good as they get and the course is in excellent shape. Some players may have had problems because there was no outside element to complain about – no wind, gales, rain or snow – and they had to rely entirely on their own ability, but playing golf in superb conditions in a wonderful setting makes the players realise how lucky we/they are having all this around us. Just imagine living in a big city.

This competition is a real challenge; we can all do (well, some of you can!) a good round, at the end of which we wonder why we haven’t been chosen to play for England, but the Scratch and Handicap Challenge is played over two consecutive weekends so the winners have to play out of their skins on both occasions.

The ‘skinless’ winner of the Scratch Challenge was Tom Partridge with an excellent gross score of 145 (74 + 71). Well done, Tom.

The other leading scores were: 2, Harry Nodwell, 149 (79 + 70); 3, Bob Martin, 152 (76 + 76); 4, Jim Colvin, 155 (77 + 78)

The winner of the Handicap Challenge who also played out of his skin was Bob Horton with a net 140. Good play, Bob.

The other leading scores were: 2, Tom Partridge, 141 (72 + 69), 3, Tony Beck, 144 (75 + 69); 4, Ian Andrew, also 144 (76 + 68)

There was a twos pot of £174 to be shared between 16 players – Jim Colvin had two of them on the 10th and 13th.
