East Budleigh play their first match in the Exeter and District Chess League in December against Tiverton Tigers at home, writes Brian Gosling.
This should be a closely fought match with the sides evenly balanced. On the international front the current World Champion Vishy Anand, the tiger of Madras, defends his title against the Norwegian Magnus Carlsen and the match should be worth following.
Eighty years ago we produced a World Champion in Devon, Rowena Drew-later to become Rowena Bruce – can we do it again? We would welcome anyone with any interest in chess of whatever ability at our club.
There will be an opportunity for stronger players to play in a team, but this need not deter you if you would rather play on a less competitive basis.
The club meets on the second Thursday of every month. The next meeting is November 14, at 7pm in the Church Hall, All Saints, East Budleigh.
The annual membership fee is £30 for adults and £15 for juniors.
