All set for South Pool pony races

The first pony races of the season take place at Buckfastleigh on Sunday at the South Pool Point to point - the planned seasonal opener having been called off due to frosty ground last weekend.

The first race is off at 11am and there are eight runners in the 138 race including the 2011 (Bejowan’s Bouquet) and 2010 (Bronze Lawrance) champion ponies, as well as Wee Antony who had a cracking season last year and finished second in the national Charles Owen finals at Aintree as well as winning at Bath. Harry Cobden takes the ride on the pony this time.

Michael Treneer takes the reins on Talponciau Perfect Print who was so successful for his brother Barnaby. It will be great to see Tamby Welch, 9, have his first race ride on Rosslayne Enchante and good luck too to Ashleigh Summersby, 10, on Brimclose Toffee Brulee, also having a first ride.

Also taking part are Megan Lawrence on her new pony Balfour Skipper and William Cox on Diptford Moonwalker.

The 148s is sure to be competitive with 2010 national champion Total Eclipse (Hannah Welch) in the field, after a season brought to an early close by injury last year. Pippa Glanville starts her last season pony racing on 2009 national champion Petite Pois and there are a whole host of riders on new ponies in this height category.

Thomasina Eyston takes the reins on the experienced Annie IV, Christopher Gregory rides the Heard’s Bubba Liscious, Millie Wonnacott partners Mick the Miller, Barnaby Treneer rides his new pony Plym Steps, Heidi Lewis has a new mount in Miss Mopsy.

Of the ponies with previous form in the D and C area, She’s So Cool ran well as a five year old last season for Chester Williams and is likely to improve as a six year old. There is a full field of 10 for this race with two reserves waiting in the wings (Cool Runner and Calypso). First pony race is off at 11am, 148s at 11.20am, with the first point to point race at noon.
