Devon and Cornwall pony race riders, their families and supporters are set to celebrate the end of the season at an awards evening at Exeter Racecourse, on Saturday, July 21.

When the last point to point of the season, the Torrington farmers’, was cancelled, it not only deprived the youngsters of their area finals, but also of their end of season awards and points championship presentation.

The Welch family stepped into action and decided to organise the event, which takes place the night before the Charles Owen racecourse series pony races at Newton Abbot.

Helpers and sponsors have been invited to the awards night which will include a video round up of the season and a quiz with a £50 voucher prize. Championship points have been calculated using the riders’ best 8 results up to the South Tetcott meeting, which turned out to be the last of the season.

It will also be a farewell to four riders, Heidi Lewis, Jake Bament, Ella Pickard and Pippa Glanville, who graduate from the sport having reached 16 years of age.

Entries for the pony racing at Newton Abbot, which takes place after racing on Sunday July 22, are: 138cm AJ O’Neill, Angelic; William Cox, Diptford Moonwalker; Jamie Perrett, Fair N Square; Jonjo O’Neill, Little Chick; Ben Godfrey, Mocking Bird; Lorcan Williams, Penway Tap Dance; Sam Burton, Renaissance; Michael Treneer, Talponciau Perfect Print.

148cm: Tom Marquand, Boyne Lass; Harry Cobden, Calypso; Hattie Heal, Cool Runner; Theo Gillard, Hawkesfield Flyer; Lucy Mager, Jessies Girl; George Tregoning, Otterburn Lady; Pippa Glanville, Petite Pois; Charlotte Greenway, Springs; Charlie Marshall, Thereshegoes; Hannah Welch, Total Eclipse; Megan Nicholls, Wotarisk.
