A bumper weekend of racing is in store in the area with point to point racing at both Chipley Park on Saturday Feb 2 where the Tiverton Foxhounds stage their rearranged meeting (previous preview stands), and the Mid Devon Foxhounds host their meeting at Black Forest Lodge on Sunday Feb 3, writes Donna Harris.

A cracking day’s racing is on the cards at Black Forest Lodge on Sunday where the first pony racing of the season takes place in the area adding to an exciting day out for all the family, action starts at 11 am with the first of two pony races.

The main race card follows on at 12 noon with the Confined and entered is Hameldown Torr an Intermediate winner in a particularly fast time at Cherrybrook trained by Ed Walker, also entered is Googoobarabajagal whose trainer John Heard will be looking for an early hat-trick after his wins at Wadebridge so far this season.

The Men’s Open is up next and of the entries a new recruit to pointing, Carrickmines, has won six chases and two hurdle races under Rules while in training with Richard Newland and is now based at George Beilby’s yard near Taunton. Both Bobs Law and Silver Story have solid claims having run well in heavy and the John Heard trained Faasel could again take on Sue Trump’s impressive gelding Kirkleigh, the two having met recently at Wadebridge where Faasel got up to win by three quarters of a length.

In The Aga Ladies’ Open the Steve Flook trained Island Life came second here last year to Special Occasion and then went on to take hunter chases at Warwick and Hereford before unseating his rider when going well at Aintree, Mobaasher has won six including three 3m chases and has had the benefit of a couple of early runs at Wadebridge having been runner up to Bryerley Bear by four lengths for jockey Lucy Gardiner.

Connolly’s Red Mills Intermediate race follow on and the Jelly O’Brien trained Hall Kelly looks to have a chance having run well at Ampton in January finishing five lengths behind French Canadian. Molland Gayle won a Restricted here in December for jockey Ian Chanin. The Les Jefford trained Delta Borget another course winner, with consistent form, should not be dismissed.

The Restricted could see the David Brace outside raider Bringinthebranston take the spoils having relished the heavy going at Chaddesley Corbett destroying his field by 30 lengths. Darren Edwards was sent off even money favourite here on Santiago Sun at the December meeting but was denied a win by Molland Gayle.

The Open Maiden has already been divided with 23 in each division the races have been sponsored by Gidleigh Park Hotel, Hi-Line Services Ltd and Kennford Tramacadam Ltd.

Black Forest Lodge is located at Kenton, nr Exeter off A380 - EX6 8HR. On course facilities bar, bookies hot refreshments. Entry £20 per car £10 Car and driver.
