Point-to-point enthusiasts will be heading to Exeter Racecourse next Tuesday (May 6) when the track stages the prestigious final of the Devon and Cornwall Intermediate Point-to-Point Series at its annual ladies’ night.

With hundreds of pounds worth of prizes to win for the best dressed ladies and men, including short breaks at Gara Rock on the cliffs of the South Hams coastline and the award winning Arundell Arms, treatments with Amanda Marsden Aveda Lifestyle Salon in Exeter, stunning clothing including many top brands from Leonard Coombe Master Saddlers and Country Life and delicious hampers from Devon Hampers the racecourse will be buzzing with glitz and glamour as it celebrates the conclusion of its season.

Eight qualifying races took place across the Devon and Cornwall Point-to-Point Area commencing at Black Forest Lodge on December 1 and concluding at the Eggesford’s meeting at Upcott Cross in April with jockey Robbie Henderson winning four of them.

Two meetings, the East Devon at Ottery St Mary and the Spooners and West Dartmoor at Cherrybrook, which were due to stage a qualifier were abandoned.

Nearly 90 horses contested the series with Julie Williams’ Tachbury the first to score following a comfortable win at Blackforest Lodge with Ed Barrett on board.

At Chipley Park Ed Walker, whose partner Polly Gundry is a director at Exeter, saddled Blazing Whale, ridden by Robbie Henderson, to score a one and a quarter lengths success.

Walker and Henderson also teamed up to score at Treborough Hill with Level Spirit.

Henderson secured a treble of intermediate wins when King’s Bench won by half a length at Great Trethew for owner Laura Claydon and made it a four timer at Uppcott cross on the Sally Randell-trained Driftashore.

Wadebridge was the location for Roz Newman’s winner Sobre Tresor who was ridden to success by Taylor Pook. Trainer Jane Williams’ 16-year-old son Chester booted home Babeny Bridge to win at Buckfastleigh and Kilworthy winner Bradley Brook, who is trained by Nicky Martin, was ridden to success by Darren Edwards.

The final was first staged on ladies’ night at Exeter in 2009 when former national point-to-point champion Ashley Wood saddled King’s Wood to win with Darren Edwards in the saddle. General manager Tim Darby said: “It’s an annual tradition at Exeter and fitting that such a prestigious series should reach its conclusion at the racecourse’s finale to the season. We are hopeful that plenty of horses who have qualified for the final will come under starters’ orders. There is always a really good fun atmosphere at our evening meeting and we are looking forward to seeing who will be crowned the 2014 intermediate champion is.”

Six races get underway at 5.50pm and there is a free bus from Exeter St Davids at 4.15pm and Exeter Bus and Coach Station at 4.30pm. For just £49 per person, or £450 per table of ten, the Exeter’s Ladies’ Night package will allow guests to indulge in a wonderful experience from the luxury of a private suite.
