The first Devon and Cornwall area pony races of the season take place at the Mid Devon point to point at Black Forest Lodge on Sunday, February 5.

There are lots of new faces and new ponies to follow for the season as well as the best of last year’s performers and it’s the first time the riders will be competing for a pair of bespoke racing boots from Classic Boots, which will be awarded to the rider judged to have ridden the best race on the day..

The 138 race is off at 11am with the 148s following at 11.20am. There are six in the 138s and a full up 10 plus two reserves in the 148s. It is a great chance to see young jockeys in action before they graduate to ptp or racing under rules once they turn 16.

In the first race Tyler Heard has his first ride on former D and C area champion pony Bronze Lawrance on loan from the Welch family this season. Tina Smith will be battling to retain her D and C area 138 title from 2011 on Bejowan’s Bouquet. Both ponies notched up unbeaten runs in their winning season. Tyler got to grips with the sport on schoolmaster Master Mink but will find the scenery different on Bronze Lawrance, a capable front runner.

In the 148s successful show rider Millie Wonnacott changes disciplines to try pony racing on Mick The Miller, formerly a good pony with the Gould family who have produced many winning pony racers. Barnaby Treneer has a new pony, Plym Steps and its also first time out for Bubba Liscious, owned by the Heard family but ridden this time by Christopher Gregory, and Thomasina Eyston has her first 148 ride on Annie IV. Experienced rider Heidi Lewis has her first outing on Miss Mopsy. The most experienced combinations in the field would be Hannah Welch on Vadlawalkover, a good staying pony, Pippa Glanville on Petite Pois and Chester Williams on She’s So Cool.

The first ponies will be in the paddock at 10.45am - don’t miss it.
