FLAREON and Chloe Grove got within a half a length of pulling off a thrilling victory over Tarka (Bryony Frost) in the 148 race at sunny Flete Park.

Chloe, 15, who broke in Flareon herself, took the initiative, setting a good early pace. Tarka was always with her though and rounded the home turn in front, and, reported Frost, idled a little in front. Flareon has won over the course and distance and ran a great race. Clover Jess has proved herself a speedy convert from showjumping and was third under Chester Williams, son of successful racehorse trainer Nick. Clover Jess won the maiden trophy.

The racing hadn't been without incident. The 138 race had seen Talponciau Perfect Print emerge from behind the trees riderless, his jockey Barnaby Treneer and he having had a misunderstanding over a marker. Barnaby was tended by paramedics having hurt his leg but fortunately it was bruised not broken as first feared and we hope he is back in the plate quickly.

His departure left his cousin Hannah Welch out in her customary front running position on Bronze Lawrance but challenged by a much improved Bejowans Bouquet (Heidi Lewis) this pony much prefering the faster going. The trophy for the first maiden pony (ie one which has not yet won a race) went to Ginger Wizard who ran well for Jake Bament to take third and another pony which is quickly improving is Clonageera Maybe ( Donald Comer-Calder) who was best local. There was a trophy for the first 128cm pony past the post in this race, which was won by Fudge (Anna Wotton).

The next pony racing is on May 15 at the Dulverton West point to point.
