Pony racing was the highlight of the day at the East Cornwall point to point. The 148 race got spectators shouting for their favourites as six of the eight runners were in contention a furlong from home. And it was the most experienced rider in the field, Hannah Welch, 14, who timed her run on dour stayer Vadlawalkover to win by just two lengths and record her 20th pony race winner.

Pushing her all the way was Jake Bament, 15, on Dandy Heights who is fast improving this season and is sure to win a race soon.

Also running a great race was Thomasina Eyston on Annie IV who were a length away in third – the new partnership’s best result of the season so far.

The ponies enjoyed the firm ground and it gave chance for some newcomers to shine. Bubbalicious (Christopher Gregory) and The Dinky Dude (Anna Wotton) made the early running and they too will surely be able to win races before the season is out. Plym Steps (Barnaby Treneer) also ran well in fourth.

The 138s were depleted by withdrawals so just five went to post. Tina Smith, unbeaten bar one run last season on Bejowan’s Bouquet, was determined to get back her winning ways and dominated but was challenged all the way by Tyler Heard (who celebrated his first win in the Larkhill 138 the previous day on Angelic) on Bronze Lawrance.

Bejowans got home by two lengths from Bronze Lawrance up the testing finish with Michael Treneer having another good third on Talponciau Perfect Print. Tamby Welch rode all the way to the line on Rosslayne Enchante and Ashleigh Summersby had another good ride on Brimclose Toffee Brulee.

Jake Bament won the pair of bespoke racing boots from Classic Boots for Ride of the Day and the race prizes were kindly sponsored by Blackburns Metals.

The next pony races are at Eggesford point to point, noon, April 15.
