Mary King has given up her ride on top stallion Chilli Morning as she felt she was not doing the horse justice.

She said: “He is a big, strong horse used to being ridden by men. For me to ride him cross country, I have to have him in a strong bit, which he doesn’t like and we had a stop cross country at Belton. I have recommended him to William Fox Pitt and the horse will move there today.

“I am very disappointed but the horse deserves to take his chance in the top flight and we just don’t ‘click’. He is a lovely horse and I expect he will go on and beat me at every event now but there is no point carrying on when we just can’t get it together. Even in the showjumping i find him very difficult to ride, but we led after the dressage at Belton.”

This weekend Mary competes top youngster Cavalier Venture while daughter Emily rides newcomers Charlemagne and Miss Indigo.

Emily was second junior, 10th overall at Belton last weekend in the OIU25 class on Mr Hi Ho, having had two showjumps down.

Mary took six horses to the event and all did well; Imperial Cavalier was second of 140 horses in the dressage, MHS King Joules led after dressage and showjumping, but neither of those ran cross country due to the firm going. Apache Sauce was 15th and is on target for Badminton.

King’s Temptress and Imperial Cavalier are likely to run their Olympic trials at Chatsworth in five weeks’ time, the GB team for London being named in the third week of May.
