Maidens make their mark

15:46 19 February 2013

With the weather set fair, mud lovers who have been in their element over the past few weeks will be given a weekend off at Great Trethew this Sunday with the going expected to be good. Renowned as a popular track for Maiden runners this East Cornwall meeting has attracted over 80 entries for the six race card.

The Cornish Times sponsors the opener, a members’ race which heads the action at 12 noon. Fountains Cloud is a previous course winner here. He’s a half-brother to the prolific mare Chesnut Annie and has valid claims to take this having recently stayed on well to win a restricted at Chipley Park for Leanda Tickle and has proven his worth for owner/trainer David Stephens.

Next up is the open maiden race for four and five-year-olds and this looks wide open with those to note including the David Dennis trained Presenting William. The gelding was travelling well at Chipley Park until weakening three out. Another entry who has already had a pipe opener this season is Tikkeche who is trained by Chloe Newman.

The four, five, six and seven-year-old open maiden has attracted 34 entries and may well be divided. Cracking Habit showed promise when second by a neck to Lucia Popp at Upcott Cross where he battled on gamely on ground described as good-good to firm and goes well for jockey Darren Edwards. The Camilla Scott-trained Honours Insight clocked up a second at Black Forest Lodge having led until the second last in a race won by Just Hattie, Hugo Where Igo made a notable run for trainer Chloe Roddick at Wadebridge having to settle for second behind Tinker Time.

Roger Young sponsors the mixed open in which Lucette Annie is sure to start favorite following her win in the Westcountry Champion Chase at Buckfastleigh last weekend for jockey Darren Edwards. The mares has won 11 point-to-points including eight open races although she may find the drying ground against her. Of the others Wee Fly goes well for jockey Bryony Frost and the partnership is seeking a season’s hat-trick.

In the restricted Hallo Dolly won her maiden at Trebudannon beating the favorite Jewellery by two lengths on good-to firm for trainer Sarah Prowse. She followed up with a second in a restricted to Fairhaven at Upcott Cross. Concluding the card is the confined which is sposonsored by Peakes. Double Bank may be looking for a hat-trick for joint owners Jimmy Cole and Emma Oliver having taken the intermediate at Black Forest Lodge followed by the confined at Buckfastleigh last weekend. Hameldown Tor could be his closet rival and may relish the drying ground.

Great Trethew is located off the A38 between Liskeard and Saltash, postcode PL14 3PZ. Entry is £15 car and driver and £20 car and occupants. There will be plenty of on course facilities on offer including a bar, hot refreshments and bookies.
