A total of 140 Entries have been received for the Mid Devon Point-to-Point at Black Forest Lodge this Saturday (February 11), writes Donna Harris.

The Mid Devon meeting, postponed from Sunday due to the frozen ground, has been rearranged for Saturday February 5.

It promises to be an action packed day with the first of the pony racing in the Devon and Cornwall area kicking off at 11am. It’s a great chance to see the young jockeys in action before they graduate to Point-to-Point racing. The second pony race is at 11.20am and both have been sponsored by Mole Avon.

The Confined race has been sponsored by a syndicate of Farriers and starts the main card at 12 noon. Seventeen are entered. They include the Camilla Scott-trained Special Account who was a 15 length winner of the Cattistock Mens Open and Hereweareagain, trained by Mandy Hand, who was a third here last year before going on to score a hat trick. Teri D Trixter is a triple Irish Point winner and acts on soft and stays well.

The Mens Open has 13 entries and is sponsored by West Devon Meat Ltd. It would be difficult to oppose the prolific winner Southwestern. He won at the course last year and has already opened this seasons account with a double at the Wadebridge meetings ridden by Neil Harris.

Queuing up to challenge could be Findlay’s Find, who has ten Pointing wins to his credit. Start Royal, another with ten wins, could see him set the pace with his front running tactics. Sherriff Hutton may come on for his second by a head in the Men’s Open at Alnwick this January.

Fifteen are entered in the Ladies’ Open. This has been sponsored by Earp Engineering. Lady Myfanwy is a Ladies’ Open specialist, this tough mare has clocked up a total of 29 wins and is a previous course winner . Double Mead is effective on right handed tracks and a previous winner of a Ladies’ Open by 20 lengths.

The Intermediate has attracted 17 entries. This race is sponsored by Connelly’s Red Mills.

Kalulushi won a restricted in December at Chaddesley Corbett. Delta Borget won a hotly-contested restricted (novice riders) here is January. Nobby Kivambo also won a restricted in January in a quick time at Ampton.

A massive 30 entries have been received for the Restricted which may well be divided on the day. The race is kindly sponsored by B J Barkwell and Sons & Lynbridge Residential. Beyond Dreams is headstrong and likes to set a good gallop and will probably lead the way.

Kirkleigh won here in style at the last meeting when beating Benefit Time by 25 lengths. Googoobarabajagal also pleased his connections when winning here when ridden by the talented Michael Heard.

There are two Divisions of the Open Maiden with 24 entered in each. It’s kindly sponsored by Gidleigh Park and Hi-Line Services Ltd & Kennford Tarmacadam and the bookies will be a good indicator for these.

Black Forest Lodge is located five miles south of Exeter, near the B3381 which is between the A380 and Starcross. The course is signposted from the A380. EX6 8HR. A bar is operating and there is ample good food available for the family.

Entry cost £20 per car with £10 for a single occupant.
