There is a chance to catch top jockeys of the future in action at Newton Abbot races on Sunday, July 22, as two Charles Owen series races will be held at the end of the normal card.

In the 138 race Jonjo O’Neill junior is in action on Little Chick while his brother AJ takes the ride on Richard and Dawn Prince’s Angelic.

Flying the flag for the West Country are William Cox on Diptford Moonwalker, Ben Godfrey on Mocking Bird and Michael Treneer on Talponciau Perfect Print, all of whom have been seen in action at point to point pony races this season. The one they all have to beat is Lorcan Williams on Penway Tap Dance.

The 148 race also looks a hot one with prolific winners Wotarisk (Megan Nicholls) and Total Eclipse (Hannah Welch) in the field along with Calypso (Harry Cobden), Jessies Girl (Lucy Mager) and Petite Pois ( Pippa Glanville) from the WestCountry but any of the 11 could win.

The main difference between point to point and Charles Owen racecourse series races is that on the racecourse series the riders have to carry a minimum weight, 7st10lb for 138s with a 3lb penalty for each win to a maximum of 9lb and 8st7lb for 148s with a 5lb penalty for each win to a maximum of 15lb. The top four ponies in each race accrue points and the top 12 in the country then qualify for the finals which, this year, will be held in Newmarket on September 22.
