THE dry spell took its toll on the East Cornwall card with only a handful of runners turning out on very firm ground at Great Trethew.

Hereweareagain (Tom Chanin) relished the fast ground in winning the Mixed Open. Reg and Mandy Hand’s nine-year-old literally left his sole opponent Border Castle standing at the third last where the latter refused. Hereweareagain, “hates the mud but likes firm ground,” said former top lady jockey Mandy Hand, who rides the gelding in all his work. “He may run in the Members at Cherrybrook next Saturday,” (April 7th) reported connections. Despite the best efforts of Richard Woollacott, Border Castle once again showed his moody side after refusing to race at Larkhill on the previous day. The formerly useful hurdler jumped the third last at the second time of asking to collect second prize.

Woollacott had no such problems in the four-runner Open Maiden, steering My Runaway to a 10 lengths win over Cordex. “He owed me that one,” said Richard, who had been put out of action for nearly three months when this Luso gelding fell on the first day of the season. The winner is owned by Hannah and Andrew Broggio, near neighbours of the Rose Ash trainer/rider, who also supplied Sine Mora who was uninjured when falling at the final fence with George Humfrey.

Apollo Blaze gave Leanda Tickle her sixth winner of the season in the Novice Riders’ race, thus maintaining her lead for the National novices’ title. Paul Harvey’s gelding became the first winner to be trained by Vanessa Shaw, who has taken over the point-to-point side of the Looe yard from her mother Pat. He is likely to be aimed at the four-miler at the Eggesford meeting. The runner-up Touch of Flame has been a grand servant to the Cumings family over the years, and gave 20-year-old Alex Hutter a fine ride, weakening only up the final climb.

The card had commenced with a non event when there were no declarations for the four and five-year-old Maiden. The day ended with walk-overs for Mayfair Lastchance (Michael Heard) and Moonberry (Will Biddick) in the Intermediate and Restricted respectively.
