Exe SC held their AGM at the beginning of December and the commodore, Rex Frost, in talking through the highlights of the year, mentioned the Comet Trio Nationals, presided over by designer Phil Morrison and won by the club’s own Iain Horlock with Debbie Woodcock.

The continued growth in yacht racing was reassuring he said, illustrated by nearly half of the South Devon Channel Week fleet being Exe boats and with Rick Newcombe winning his class at Dartmouth with a youth crew.

The rise of youth sailing was significant, notably with those joining the adult sailors on Wednesday evenings and James Nicholson winning the Two Rivers Junior Series.

He was then able to assure the members that hard work and attention to detail had brought the club through the poor financial climate and, provided that new sailors continued to wish to join the club, it should be well set up for the future.

This theme was expanded on by Nick Webber (Hon. Sec) and Fiona Cameron-Jones (Treasurer).

New appointments were made for the honoured positions of Vice Admiral and Rear Admiral with long standing members Eileen Underhill and Malcolm Elliot being elected to those positions.

With little controversial other business to discuss, the new committees were elected and in handing over to the new commodore, Dave Preston, Rex praised his committees for their dedication and hard work with special mentions to Mike Hill, Brian Abbott, Ted Draper, Mary Fagan, Bob Horlock and Mike Rice.

After the Christmas swim, where a dozen members braved the elements, the close of year Boxing Day race, was held in fine warm weather with 17 boats turning out to enjoy Race Officer Hedley Saunders’ offering. In very fluky conditions the fleet stayed relatively close together, but the RS400 of Les Arscott and Chris Rhodes again escaped from the pack.

The runners up were Mike and Anne Way (RS 200) and Tony Brewster and Toby Elliot (Trio).

The prize for the winners was presented over Mulled wine and mince pies in the company of families and friends.

Vice commodore Rick Newcombe took the opportunity to present a leaving gift to Club Pro, Sam Jacklin in appreciation of his work for the club this year.

Sam is one of the first non-French staff to be recruited by the prestigious Artemis Group to work with their Figaro racing fleet in Brittany.

Power boat and Junior Xsquad training continue through the winter and the club looks forward to hosting the Volvo Academy weekend in May.
