Exeter Racecourse has announced that it will now stage an all hurdle card at its Bathwick Tyres-sponsored fixture this Sunday (February 9), writes Lucy Johnson.

With 50 per cent of the chase course waterlogged and more rain expected, the decision has been taken to give the popular fixture the best chance of going ahead.

Clerk of the course Barry Johnson said: “We have had 32mm of rain in the last 24 hours which has left the chase course 50 per cent waterlogged. With a forecast of at least another 30mm of rain before racing on Sunday the decision has been made to run an all hurdle card.

“The hurdles will be moved over next to the chase fences on ground only normally used for bypassing. By doing this 85% of the hurdle course is raceable today. This gives us the best chance of racing on Sunday, with a bit of help from the sky.”

General manager Tim Darby added: “This is one of our most popular fixtures of the year and we want to give the meeting every chance of going ahead. Pre-sales have been exceptional so we just have to hope we don’t get any more rain than predicted.”

The first of six races comes under starters’ orders at 1.25pm. A two for £15 ticket offer ends at midnight February 7. A free bus leaves Exeter St David’s at noon and the Bus and Coach Station 12.15am, returning half an hour after the last race. Children aged 17 and under race free.
