This year Exeter Rowing Club is celebrating its 150th anniversary, writes Kerri Ann Upham

There have been a number of events throughout the year to celebrate reaching this milestone, the pinnacle of which will be the gala dinner held on October 25.

The club started in 1864 at the Port Royal on Exeter’s historic quayside and at the time was one of a number of clubs on the river.

Over the years the clubs have come and gone, until 1946 when only Exeter Amateur Rowing Club and Port Royal Club remained. They merged to form the Exeter Rowing Club which continues to this day.

The club has experienced highs and lows over the years, been homeless on a couple of occasions and produced some outstanding athletes.

To mark its history a book has been written by club member and academic Alan Peacock which covers the 150 years, its notable figures and future plans. Copies of the book are available to buy through the club.

In celebration of the anniversary Exeter Rowing Club are hosting a gala dinner. The event is to be held in the Exeter University Great Hall where a three course meal will be served, followed by live music from the Loose Cannons.

Guests will include the Honorary President of British Rowing and the Lord Mayor of Exeter, who will join us in reflecting on our eventful past and celebrating the great performances of our crews over the year.

The Gala Dinner is the perfect opportunity for a reunion with past members coming from across the country to join the celebrations and also a chance for the crews to let their hair down after a hard fought regatta season. Exeter Rowing Club welcomes members past and present, friends and families and anyone wanting to get to know the club to this event. Tickets are on sale now with order forms available through the club website or for collection from the club house, but the closing date is September 1.
