Exmouth Harriers cannot repeat past glories at the Erme Valley Relay

PUBLISHED: 10:55 10 July 2014

Nearly a hundred teams of four lined up last Friday (4 July) for the Erme Valley Relay held over a hilly and winding 2.5-mile loop from Ivybridge Rugby Club, writes Dave Eveleigh.

This number was despite conditions which Terry Oldham described eloquently on the Exmouth Harriers Facebook pages thus: “A wild, wet, gloomy evening with the Ivybridge Beacon only a distant shrouded memory of clear blue skies”.

Unfortunately, by the end of the race, memories of the Harriers’ glorious victory of 2013 seemed rather distant also. This year’s winners were Torbay AC, just five seconds ahead of Plymouth Harriers.

There was then more than a minute before the third team in and a further 60 seconds to a closely finishing group of three teams with SWRR fourth, Sidmouth fifth and Exmouth sixth.

The Exmouth team, running in this order with individual times in brackets, was Adam Miller (13:52), Pete Fletcher (13:50), Dave Stone (13:57) and Mike Musgrove (14:02), a total time of 55:41.

It is worth noting that Stone and Musgrove were both brought in from the Veteran ranks and that only 12 seconds separated the fastest and slowest legs by this quartet. The Exmouth Men’s B team were 24th in 62:32 and the third B team home. That team and their times were: Scott Jordan (16:17), Jamie Palmer (14:51), Chris Dupain (15:07) and Richard Bishop (also 16:17), a fine set of figures for all of them.

Exmouth’s only prize winners of the day, the women’s team [Cathy Newman (14:55), Emma White (17:27), Lisa Hatchard (18:56) and Becky Fagg (16:34) for a total 67:52] finished 39th, but were the third all-female quartet in.

No prizes for mixed gender teams, but Exmouth entered one anyway and Ben White (15:48), Amy Tew (19:20), Lorraine Gilson (18:56) and Richard Middleton (15:43) were 44th in 69:47 with Lorraine’s performance standing out.

There was just one veterans’ team from Exmouth running, in the Men Over 60 category. That team was 82nd in 86:29 and 4th in the age group.

At age 60 Dave Eveleigh is new to this age group and he was timed at 18:10. The other three could more accurately be described as ‘well over’ 60, each of them being 71.

This septuagenarian trio were Jim Wyatt (23:09), Jon Reade (22:09) and Les Turner (23:02).
