Marc Hebert is a sportsman on a mission, writes Steve Birley.

The 44-year-old Exmouth-based PE teacher is setting himself up for a series of challenges that will test his endurance – and ability – to the full.

He is a very driven character as there is a very personal reason for his challenges.

Marc and his wife Sarah have a daughter Katie who was born in September 2013 with goldenhar syndrome, a rare congenital defect which means she is facing a number of challenges over the coming years.

One of those challenges is a cleft palette, which is being repaired at Bristol Children’s Hospital in August of this year.

Marc says: “The care we have received from the Royal Devon and Exeter and the Bristol hospitals has simply been fantastic. I have decided to use the skills that I have to raise money for a charity relating to Katie’s needs as a thank you for the care she has had and will have in the future. Operation Smile send volunteer teams of doctors and nurses to countries all over the world and perform life changing cleft lip and palette repairs on children who are not as lucky as Katie.”

He continued: “Over a period of six months myself and a group of friends are taking part in number of running, cycling and climbing challenges in the hope of raising funds for this amazing charity. These will include the 10km Rock Solid Challenge at Escot, a 10km Men’s Health Survival of the Fittest race in September in Cardiff, the Devon Coast to Coast Cycle and three cycling Sportives. In July myself and two friends will be cycling 250 miles unsupported from London to Paris. We will be carrying all our equipment and hopefully will complete the ride in three days.”

The first challenge is next weekend on June 14, a 60-mile relay on the East Devon Way, starting and finishing at the Beach Pub in Exmouth.

This event has been organised by Katie’s grandparents Terry Oldham and Lorraine Gilson, who are active members of the Exmouth Harriers.

The run is split into a relay of various lengths and begins at 6am with the intention being to be back at the Beach Pub by 5.30pm. Members of the Harriers will also be joining the runners and Marc is personally looking to run around 20 miles on the day.

Marc and Sarah, a doctor, originally hail from Nottingham, but have been living in Exmouth for the past three years.

People can help Marc in his bid top raise substantial funds by visiting the Just Giving site. Donations can be made either directly to Marc’s own page www.justgiving.com/Marc-Herbert1 or by donating directly to the charity Operation Smile.
