The Edge Race Cup takes place this coming weekend (June 13 to 15).

This years event is the biggest kite-surfing competition in the UK and has attracted the biggest names in European kite racing to Exmouth.

Amongst the kite boarders on show will be the current European Race Champion Olly Bridge, British National Champion Callum Edge and British Wave Champion Lee Harvey.

Steph Bridge, owner of Edge Watersports and four times world race champion, says: “The popularity of the Edge Race Cup made it the perfect choice for hosting the national championships. I’m thrilled that Exmouth has been recognised for such a high-profile event. For five years participants have been drawn to our event from around the world. Once we were seen as training practice for bigger competitions, but this year we are the big one to train for! The event has some of the biggest names in the sport, but we also have open events to allow anyone who can kite-surf to get involved and see how well they do against the best in the world. This year the event will also include a new and exciting discipline called kite hydrofoiling alongside a new IKA Twin Tip class that will add to the spectacle of the event.”

The events title sponsor is Exeter-based ATASS Group and is also supported by local firms Pebblebed Vineyard and O’Hanlons Brewery.

Spectators and visitors to the event are also being offered the opportunity to learn the basics of the sport by participating in the free 40-minute powerkite lessons that will be on offer throughout the afternoons on Saturday and Sunday (June 14 and 15). The lessons will take place on dry land and students will be offered the chance to fly a range of powerkites, kiteboards and kitebuggies - a perfect introduction to the sport together with lots of fun! Lessons are available to everyone from the age of eight and up and lessons can be booked in advance by calling the edgewatersports team on 01395 222551. Alternatively lessons can be booked on the day, however spaces will be limited and allocated on a first come basis.

More details about taking part or watching the Edge Race Cup are available from the EdgeWatersports website www.edgewatersports.com
