Feniton lost their top of the table game at Exmouth Amateurs, beaten by the odd goal in three.
Blues boss Mark Kingdon had lamented the loss of leading scorer Paul Dowling in the previous game at Phoenix, and his sides hopes were further hit by injury to stand-in keeper Sam Geek and Eliot Dyer.
With three regulars missing it is credit to the strength in depth of the Blues squad that they could travel to Warrenview and make the Ammies work as hard as they did to secure the points that leave them with a tidy lead at the top of the Division One table.
All the goals came in the first half of a wind dominated contest. Feniton trailed 2-0 before Alex Frankpitt slotted a penalty awarded after Ben Allen had been felled at the end of a mazy run into the Ammies area.
After the break Feniton were surprisingly below-par and the game petered out. That disappointed Kingdon, who said: “We failed to retain the ball as well as I know this team can. We battled, and I cannot fault the players for their collective effort and commitment. Sadly though, we chose the wrong day to play well below what I consider to be our best, and as Ammies are a very accomplished side, we needed to be at our best to see them off. There’ll be no panic though. There’s lots of football left this season and we do have a swift return with Ammies coming to Acland Park very soon.”
On Saturday Blues travel to Cullompton Rangers and should have Matt Kingdom back in goal after the stopper sat out the last game of his suspension at Warrenview.
Meanwhile, the news on Paul Dowling is that he has a chipped bone and ankle ligament damage, but should be able to return in five to six weeks and so will be available for the Blues end of season run-in.
