Feniton 7, Budleigh Salterton Reserves 2
The weather-resistant Acland Park once again provided football when so many grounds couldn’t as the Blues took their goal tally for the season to date to 80 from 17 matches in all competitions.
The game was switched from the main pitch to the narrower second team pitch, but it did not stop Feniton putting visiting Budleigh Salterton Reserves to the sword.
However, the visitors had their moments, none more so than when they seemed certain to level at 2-2 in the second half only to be denied by a stunning double save from Blues keeper Matt Kingdon. The visitors struck first, opening the scoring before Ben Ede scored his first goal in a Feniton shirt to restore parity. The outstanding Paul Dowling put the Blues ahead and that was how it stood at half-time. Budleigh Salterton made a bright start to the second half and drew that stunning stop from Kingdon. The save seemed to spur the home side to find a new gear and they rattled in five more goals, conceding a late second to end emphatic winners. Ede and Dowling bagged a second each whilst Charlie Selley, Andrew Jones and Dave O’Connor also netted for Feniton as they closed to within three points of leaders Hatherleigh who have played two games more.
Feniton boss Mark Kingdon said: “I have to be pleased with both the performance and the outcome given the difficult conditions the game was played on. It was wet and slippery and playing on the narrower second team pitch was never going to see the passing game we like to play. That said I thought everybody put a shift in and when players do that you tend to get the desired result.”
Kingdon was full of praise for another excellent contribution from Josh Fenwick. He said: “Josh (Fenwick) is a pal of Dave O’Connor from University days and is a quality player who usually plays for Torpoint in the SWP league. To have him travel up from Plymouth for the game was a real boost for us. He and Simmo (Mark Simic) make a real quality centre back pairing.”
On Saturday Feniton travel to Willand Rovers Reserves (3pm).
