Fletcher leads Exmouth Harriers home in Ironbridge Runner Exeter 10k

12:03 28 August 2014

The prospect of a balmy August evening and a forgiving course meant that the Ironbridge Runner Exeter 10K attracted getting on for 400 runners to the Riverside Valley Park for their latest meeting (August 20), writes Dave Eveleigh.

A fresh breeze would have slowed times a little, but the half-dozen or so Exmouth Harriers who ran there should have been satisfied enough with their performances. Second claim member and local lad Tom Merson won the race in his Bristol and West vest, recording an eye-catching 31:12.

Peter Fletcher was the first Exmouth Harrier to finish, coming in 30th in a time of 36:41. There was a special award this year for the top 50, which the next Exmouth finisher just missed out on, Alistair Douglas completing the distance in 52nd place in 39:50, just three seconds slower than 50th.

Richard Bishop is racing regularly at the moment, here recording 41:05 in 65th. Andrew Johnson continues in a good vein of form with 88th in 42:30. He followed this up four days later at the Torbay Regatta 10K with 81st place in 42:35 and was 6th of 40 Men age 45-49 In July Kay Nias chased home Dave Eveleigh at the Yeovilton 5K and returned there in August to slice half a minute of her time that day with a 19:37 clocking.

In Exeter she set her sights on her much faster club-mate Johnson and was just eight seconds slower (42:38) than him in 90th. However, more importantly Kay had taken a whopping two minutes off her personal best, the serious runner’s principle motivator!

Richard Pyle was 98th in 43:33 and Dave Eveleigh 127th in a comfortable 46:24. As well as Kay Nias Harrier Jamie Palmer also headed to Yeovilton in August where he recorded a solid 17:35 for the 5K race there.

(PS guys, where else would I get to use the word “whopping” if I didn’t do these reports – possibly my all-time favourite word!).
