Ottery St Mary 1, Axminster Town 3

Axminster Town made sure it was a very Good Friday for Tigers’ followers with a 3-1 success at Ottery St Mary.

A second win of the South West Peninsula League season was no more than Ray Self’s side deserved as they dominated from first whistle to last.

Indeed, had it not been for an inspired shift from the Otters glovesman, then the Tigers may well have won by a greater margin!

Matt Micklewight and Joel Seward were both denied twice by wonderful saves.

Micklewight did eventually get the better of then keeper and went on to bag a brace and the other Tigers goal came from Pete Knox as they took a three goal advantage into the break.

In the second half the home side took advantage of some sloppy play in the Town defence to get a goal back, but the Tigers were not to be denied their rare success.

Self said: “It had been coming. I felt the week before we had played ever so well at Okehampton and got nothing for our efforts. The difference at Ottery was that we took our chances and that’s been a continuing problem for us for much of the campaign. We have been competitive in many of our games, but failed to take the chances that have come our way, especially at key times. Things are certainly moving in the right direction for the club both on and off the field.”

Brothers Danny and Lee Beer were exceptional in the two full back berths.

The younger of the pair, Lee, has had a season beset by injury woes whilst Danny was back in the side after a three week injury enforced lay-off. Self said: “The brothers were superb throughout.

They gave us real stability in the wide berths and we were able to build on that with good ball retention.”

The Tigers have just two games to play to compete their season. They are at Alphington next Monday (April 16) and then travel to Civil Service the following Saturday.

Self says: “Finishing second bottom is now the target.”
