University of Exeter 4, Axminster Town 3

The Tigers slipped to only their third defeat of the league season.

Perhaps of greater concern is that is was Tigers second reversal in their last three outings and they have not now won since the October 27, 4-0 triumph at home to Crediton United.

It all began so well on a superb surface in Exeter when Martin Hancock fired Town ahead after just three minutes.

The students went into the break on level terms when they netted in the closing stages of the half. The hosts took a 60th minute lead, but to their credit, the Tigers were soon level thanks to a Tom Perryman strike.

Twenty minutes from time the students regained the lead and added a fourth with five minutes to go. There was still time for the Tigers to set up a grandstand finish with a Richie Emmett header, but that was as good as it got for the travelling Town faithful.

On Saturday Paul Ashford’s side host a Teignmouth outfit who have played six away games so far and won only at Galmpton, they have lost each of the other five going down at Exeter Civil Service, Crediton United, Okehampton Argyle, Stoke Gabriel and Totnes and Dartington.
