Busy time ahead for upwardly mobile Axminster Town

Axminster Town are up to eighth in the South West Peninsula League Eastern Division table after a terrific 2-1 success away at Appledore.

The Tigers could, perhaps should, have returned from North Devon with a far bigger winning margin, such was their dominance on the day. However, they were guilty of missing some gilt-edged chances and it was only in the final 15 minutes that goals from joint-manager Johnny Hurford and the division’s leading scorer, Tony Pinder, turned round a 1-0 deficit to secure the three points.

Joint-boss Josh Stunell said: “For long periods it really did look like being ‘one of those days’.

“We peppered their box all afternoon and really ought to have the game put to bed long before our two goals were scored. That said, the fact we were able to keep knocking on the door despite a growing number of misses and ‘near-things’ speaks volumes for the character in the team.”

Stunell continued: “We are in a good place at the moment and, if anything, that recent 6-0 thumping at Saltash in the FA Vase was the wake-up call we needed as a team.

“Since then we have dug out some impressive performances and banked points to lift us into a position from where we can go on and mount a serious challenge for a top six place.”

This Saturday, Town turn their attention to the Devon Premier Cup and a trip to Plymstock United, who sit in a similar position to the Tigers, but in the Western Division of the SWP League.

After Saturday’s cup tie, the Tigers host Stoke Gabriel on Tuesday evening (7.30pm) and then entertain Bovey Tracey the following Saturday (October 13). With the next two home games against two of the Eastern Division top three, home success in both matches would elevate Town closer to a similar berth.

Stunell says: “It’s a good opportunity for us to use the wider squad for the cup tie as we do have to take into consideration two big league games next week. Of course, we want to make progress on all fronts, but we also have to look at the bigger picture, so it may well be we utilise the wider squad for the cup tie so we are fresh for what are two very big league games.”
