Cranbrook will have to await the outcome of a decision from the Devon FA with regard to their progress in this season’s Football Express Cup after their first round match at home to Spreyton was abandoned at half-time by the match referee.

At the halfway point of the game, Cranbrook were losing 3-1 with their goal having been scored by Dave Wise.

The reason for the abandonment seems to have been after an altercation between a supporter of Spreyton and the match official and the matter will now be considered by the Devon FA.

As for the game itself, Cranbrook boss Jon Martin says: “We were again missing almost half the side and the lads that played gave their all, but we were, for the most part, poor. Wisey [Dave Wise] scored direct from a corner, but, of course, if the result is wiped out he’ll lose the goal, which is tough on him!”

As for the issues that led to the abandonment, a reflective Cranbrook boss said: “It was all very unsavoury and perhaps best left to the FA to resolve. For our part we are very comfortable in the knowledge that we had nothing to do with it. The referee decided to abandon the contest and we will now have to wait to see what the overall verdict is.”

This Saturday (October 13) Cranbrook are in league action with a swift return meeting with a Bravehearts side that beat them 5-1 when the teams met at Broadclyst as recently as last month.

Martin says: “I am really hoping – probably praying, if truth be known – that we get back some, if not all, of the five or six lads who missed the Spreyton cup tie. We did not do ourselves justice when we hoisted Bravehearts recently and this is a quick chance to put the record straight.”

He continued: “I’d certainly like to think that lads will be itching to play given that Bravehearts use the home ground of Western League side Willand Rovers.”
