Archant

Last Thursday news broke from the City camp that Alan Gow, City’s leading scorer was leaving the Club for Bristol Rovers, writes Gareth Hughes.

Whilst unfortunate in its timing, the club indicated that the primary motivation behind the deal is the need for cost cutting at City to maintain its stability.

As they say though, every cloud has a silver lining, and manager Paul Tisdale was pragmatic about the needs of the club and positive about the 22 year old Eliot Richards who joins City from Bristol in the two way deal.

The Grecians chief said: “Whilst there were was no option, as part of the arrangement, we have also had the opportunity to bring in another promising young player into our group with a view to the long term, which fits in seamlessly with our model of developing young players.”

Ahead of the game on Saturday with fellow strugglers, and the once mighty Portsmouth, the Grecians had failed to score in six of their previous seven matches on home turf.

It was always going to be another tricky game but the good news is that newcomer Eliot Richards made his debut as a half-time substitute in City’s 1-1 draw, and made an impression.

It was from his quick throw that Liam Sercombe struck a 94th-minute equaliser! Portsmouth had taken the lead in the 9th minute and City played the first half against a strong wind. Pompey also missed a sitter which would probably have put the game beyond City’s reach.

Overall it was a reasonable game to watch with both sides playing the best they could on the day.

At the final whistle the Portsmouth camp were devastated and City probably thought, and I agree, that quite rightly that they had fought hard for the deserved the point. Paul Tisdale had to make two substitutions at half time due to injury to Scott Bennett and Pat Baldwin. Everyone in the team worked hard and gave their all; no one went missing on the pitch. Clearly money is tight at the Park and more than ever Exeter need our support.

On Tuesday The Grecians bowed out of the St Luke’s Challenge Cup in the semi-final at the hands of Plymouth Parkway, as the hosts won 5-3 on penalties after an enthralling game marred with three red cards had finished 3-3 at the final whistle.

A good news story to cheer us up! When City’s quarter-final tie with Burnley is finally played the semi-final of the Under-21 Premier League Cup could see the Grecians travel to either Newcastle United or Manchester City! To visit either would simply be brilliant for all concerned.

This weekend City travel to the home of Southend United who have out of their last 10 games won three, drawn five and lost two.

They are in seventh place in table with 47 points, nine places and 12 points above the Grecians. There is no doubt that this will be a difficult game in difficult times for the Grecians and if we are looking the good news last weekend Southend were beaten 2-1 by Mansfield who are one place behind Exeter in the table. Come on you Reds!

This coming Monday (February 17), the annual East Devon Grecians quiz will be held in the War Memorial Club, with the likelihood of a couple of players attending! Starts 7.30 pm prompt. All comers will be made very welcome. If you’d like more information on this or any matter of things East Devon Grecians then contact Di Lee on 01395 577567.
