Six points out of Exeter City’s two games in the past week have helped to ease fears of relegation for the League Two club, writes Richard Tuson.

Last Saturday saw City end their long home run without a win when they beat promotion chasing Fleetwood Town 3-0. The Grecians had not won at home since October 5, but the match saw a total transformation with a confident deserved victory over a team with one of the best away records in the football league this season.

Exeter’s opening goal came when Fleetwood’s John Parkin knocked the ball into his own net whilst trying to deal with a testing cross, half way through the first half. Exeter continued pressing after the break and were rewarded with a brace of goals from in form loanee Elliott Richards.

The win saw the Grecians in a more comfortable position moving up five places in the table ahead of Tuesday night’s away clash with arch-rivals Plymouth Argyle.

In a hostile atmosphere Exeter completed this seasons double over Argyle winning 2-1, they had won the home match 3-1 earlier in the season, which ironically, was City’s last home win until last Saturdays victory against Fleetwood.

The host’s had taken the lead just before the interval when Danny Coles handled the ball in the penalty area and the spot kick was converted by Plymouth’s top scorer Reuben Reid.

City came out much the stronger in the second half, controlling the game and dominating possession. Chance after chance went begging until Exeter drew level with Liam Sercombe’s 20-yard deflected shot. The winner came late on as Tom Nichols set up Elliott Richards who scored his third goal in two games.

This Saturday City take on Accrington Stanley at home with the match kicking-off at 3pm.

Come on you reds!
