The Feniton team celebrate after their penalt shoot-out success in the East Devon Senior Cup final at Crediton United's Lords Meadow ground. The Blues won the cup in the shoot-out after a 0-0 draw with Fresha League champions St Martins.

Archant

Feniton are the new holders of the magnificent trophy that is the East Devon Senior Cup.

The competition has been played for each year since 1904 and this is the first time that it has been held at Acland Park.

Feniton had gone into the final at Crediton United’s Lords Meadow home as the underdogs facing Fresha League champions St Martins who had done the double over them in the league campaign.

The match was a close encounter of the special kind. However, had it not been for an outstanding display by the Saints goalkeeper Lee Bailey the Blue ribbons would have been on the famous old trophy long before the final whistle! Perhaps the glovesman’s most inspired stop was the 90th minute one that denied Paul Dowling!

Feniton player-boss Mark Kingdon was shown a red card in the 25th minute for his reaction to what had been a particularly aggressive challenge!

Wing back Alex Frankpitt put in an assured display for the Blues and he was one of the penalty takers that showed real composure in a nerve-jangling shoot-out after two hours of action without a goal at either end of the pitch!

With the player boss out of things having been sent off it was left to his number two Chris Wilkins to sort out the spot kick takers.

Frankpitt, Charlie Selley, Dave O’Connor and Mark Simic, all tucked away their spot kicks, as did the first four takers for the Saints.

However, the fifth kick for St Martins cannoned back into play off the upright leaving Ben Ede with the opportunity to be the hero and slot the decisive kick – something he did with aplomb to be promptly submerged beneath a pile of celebrating team mates!

Feniton become the latest name on the trophy which was won in 1904 by RFA Battery!

Feniton boss Kingdon said: “It was a very special night. I was very unfortunate with the red card and it made it very hard having to watch the action without being able to do anything about it. They (St Martins) had the better first half chances, but in the second half and during extra time we had the better chances. Of course a penalty shoot-out is always a lottery, but on this occasion we were crowned winners and I don’t think anyone who saw the game would begrudge us this victory. The trophy is a beauty and it has some famous old names on it I am so proud that we have been able to add Feniton to the long list of teams who have lifted it.”

As for next season the Blues boss says: “I’d love to have another crack at wining the top honour and getting the club into the South West Peninsula league. For me to go again I’d need the players to buy into it as well. I am getting good vibes at the moment and hopefully they’ll all stick around and we can add a few more legs to the squad and have a right go next season.”
