Honiton Devils Under-10s were narrowly beaten in a close cup encounter in Exeter, writes Sean Brown.

Sam Foster was captain for the game which had a good tempo about its start with both teams looking to attack.

The Devils, with Ewan Evans linking up well with Sam Foster and Zac Harrison in mid-field took charge and, some excellent movement of the ball by River Leisk created a couple of early chances for strike partner Luke Matthews.

At the other end of the pitch solid defending by Connor Brown and competent handling by stand-in glovesman Dominic McCreadie Taylor, saw half-time arrive with no goals at either end.

After the break, with Zac Harrison bossing midfield and the tough tackling of Jordon Harrison breaking up any momentum the home side tried to develop, Devils remained well in contest.

A great move down the left started by Jai Freemantle led to a clinical pass by Ewan Evans to set up a shooting chance for Hayden Owen. The home keeper gathered the ball, moved it on quickly, and, with a swift counter-attack, the home side scored what proved to be the only goal.

Devils were incredibly unfortunate not to level when, with four minutes remaining skipper Sam Foster rifled a free-kick that first struck a defender, the lopped up and over the keeper only to canon back off the frame of the goal!

Jai Freemantle was named the Devils Man of the Match for his ‘never-say-die’ approach to the game. Special mention must go too Ewan Evans who ran his socks off.

Coach Sean Brown said: “I am so proud of them all. They refused to give up and really did deserve to get something for their collective supreme efforts. They can certainly take this year’s cup run experience as a real positive.”
