Honiton Town 2, Hemyock 1

The visit of Hemyock was to be a true test of how far Honiton had progressed in the last few months, writes Kyle Newham.

Honiton began the brighter with Connor Flanagan reducing the Hemyock defence to spectators as he executed several excellent dribbles!

Hemyock hit back with a promising attack down their left which was thwarted by an excellent tackle from Michael Taylor.

With the elements in their favour, Honiton were the first to conjure up a number of chances; Jacob Wright hitting a thunderous drive from 25-yards only to denied, by a great save from the visiting keeper and Tom Young who met a Jack Smith corner with an excellent header only to be denied again by the keeper. Elliot Forwell created another chance from the left, sending a pass through to Jack Katene who shot over the bar. Hemyock hit back, but good tackling from Michael Taylor and Tom Young prevented a score. Some neat interplay between Connor Flanagan, Kyle Newham, Jacob Murphy and Jacob Wright was a joy to watch. The first goal, just before the break, came from an assist by the Honiton keeper-James Broad, who, from a goal kick, found Jacob Wright in space allowing him time to strike an excellent volley over the keeper.

After the break the visitors equalised, reacting after a corner, striking a thunderous shot past the home keeper who had no chance! Hemyock continued to press with James Broad making a number of important saves. Notable defensive work from Jacob Ambrose, Jacob Murphy, Tom Young and Connor Flanagan also prevented a further score.

Honiton weathered the pressure and hit back with some smart interplay, passing and moving at speed. However, the deciding goal came from a set piece, as Jack Smith again struck an excellent corner which an unmarked Joe Gillard met with a fierce header, straight into the back of the visitors net.

The game became fragmented as time wore on, but it was Honiton who continued to play attractive football. At the final whistle Honiton ran out deserved winners.

Joint man of the match award goes to Connor Flanagan who never stopped running, created chances and when switched to right back made some excellent tackles and James Broad for a faultless goalkeeping display, a goal assist and several great saves.
