Honiton Town 6, Feniton 2

Honiton Town Under-14s were emphatic winners in their Exeter and District Youth League derby meting with Feniton, writes Kyle Newham.

There was an 18-player squad on duty, ready for action on a pitch rapidly drying out in the spring sunshine.

Honiton started brightly with Kyle Newham and Jack Smith testing the opponent’s keeper.

The opening goal came from Cameron Long with a crisp finish from close range and Long soon doubled his tally after being set up by Conor Flanagan.

The visitors rallied, and hit back, but got little change out of the tracking back by Jack Smith and solid defending on the left flank by Jacob Murphy.

The third goal was a cracker as Flanagan skipped past several challenges on the right flank before cutting inside and rifling the ball past the keeper.

The bright start with good passing and utilisation of the flanks was a joy to watch. The early dominance continued and both Jacob Wright and Jack Smith went close.

However, concentration levels slipped as Honiton conceded two goals in quick succession to bring the visitors back to within one goal of the hosts. They might well have drawn level but for some smart saves from James Broad in the Town goal.

Jack Smith sent Honiton into the break with a 4-2 lead with a strike from the edge of the area.

At half-time the home side rang the changes, making no fewer than seven substitutions.

The tempo slowed from a frenetic first half as the high line employed by Feniton concentrated play in midfield with very little coordinated passing moves. Ben Harris held the ball up well and provided some useful opportunities for Elliott Forwell and Ethan Seymour who both had efforts saved.

Feniton continued to press and created opportunities and Broad was again called into action a number of times, something he did with aplomb.

Further changes made 20 minutes into the second half with creative football hard to come by as the Feniton team closed own space. However, a good through ball from Jacob Wright set up Kyle Newham to score but after a lengthy consultation with his linesman the ‘goal’ was ruled offside and disallowed!

The next raid did see another goal as great determination from Flanagan ended with a fifth for Honiton,

The final word was left for Newham, smashing the ball home from 6-yards with five minutes remaining.

There were a number of notable performances for Town with Conor Flanagan, Jack Smith, Kyle Newham, Jacob Murphy and James Broad, all delivering excellent shifts.

The Man of the Match award went to Cameron Long for his brace of goals and his al-round contribution of excellent team play, tackling back and holding the defensive line with Tom Young.

Honiton Town Under-14s are very grateful to the support given them by TS Racing who have provided funding towards the team kit and training costs.
