Ottery St Mary seeking to launch cup run with home game against Dartmouth United

Ottery St Mary head into tomorrow’s Devon Senior Cup home tie against Dartmouth United Reserves hoping to launch a run towards county cup glory.
Dartmouth United play in Division Two of the South Devon Football League and they are no strangers to the Otters for the two teams met at Washbrook Meadow in a pre-season game.
Ottery boss Dave Fairweather says: “We did well against them in the pre-season game, but I would think they will have a much changed side from the one we met in August. That said, we are at home and I’d like to think that we can have a decent run in this particular cup competition this season.”
Tomorrow’s Washbrook Meadow cup tie kicks off at 2pm.
Town are without Johnny De Cruz, Dan Jewell, Dan Welch and Ben Rushden for the game, but club captain Curtis Winchombe and Chris Ambrose, both of whom missed last Saturday’s abandoned game at Sandford, are back. That game at Sandford was abandoned with a good 15 minutes remaining after one of the home team suffered a broken leg. The Otters have an apalling record against the Mid Devon men - no wins in four meetings prior to this visit to Sandford, and it was not going well when they fell two goals down early in the second half. Compounding the misery had been that leading scorer Corey Ringer had seen a penalty graze the outside of an upright.
However, Ottery boss Dave Fairweather introduced one of the club’s Under-18 players, Max Thomas, from the bench and he played a big part in an Otters revival that saw them level things up with goals from Luke Jones and Tom Badcott - both players netting their first goals for the club. Once level, it seemed only a matter of time before a dominant Ottery added a third, but then came that unfortunate broken leg for one of the home side and the match referee called a halt to proceedings which means that the game will be replayed at some future date.
The Otters boss said: “It’s always unfortunate when a player suffers an ninjury like that and we had no complaints with the decision to abandon the game.
“In other Ottery news, the ladies’ team chalked up a superb 8-0 home win in their Devon Women’s League game against Plainmoor.
Meg Williams led the scoring honours with a five goal haul and the other goals came from Georgia Baker, Louise Ilsley and Lauren West.
It’s been quite a turnaround for the Otterettes, who are only in their third season and clean sheet wins like this latest one, only a ‘dream’ a couple of years ago, are now something of a regular event!
The Ottery Under-18s were 3-1 winners when they met Tedburn St Mary Reserves in a Wasbrook Meadow friendly.
Ollie Benson, Max Pyne and Max Thomas scored the Ottery goals and this Sunday (October 14), the Under-18s are in action at Okehampton where kick-off is at 2pm.
The Otterettes are also in action on Sunday. They are at home to Halwill in the County Cup with kick-off at 2pm.
