July’s one-week course members enjoyed some challenging weather, with strong lift, horrendous sink and awkward crosswinds this week, writes Jill Harmer.

Bran Searle, a junior member from Cornwall, completed his first solo and soared for 40 minutes on only his second solo flight.

On Thursday, although the conditions near the ground were quite difficult and limited those who could fly solo, Aston Key from Huntsham flew for more than five hours in the local area, qualifying for his ‘silver duration’ and completing his silver badge (50km distance, five-hour duration, 1000m height gain).

Thursday evening was busy with a group from Teignbridge canoe club who enjoyed a lovely evening with a gentle wind blowing on the westerly ridge extending their trial lessons.

On Friday, some club members took a spare winch cable from the course to fly their own gliders, and Adrian Phillips from Cullompton completed 125km to Henstridge and back.
