Honiton Hornets HC 5,Okehampton Columbines 1
Honiton played host to the Dartmoor side Okehampton while joint top of the League in Petroc Division 2 with another East Devon team, Sidmouth & Ottery Hockey Club - and had high hopes of maintaining this position, writes Ann Reed.
Just three minutes into the game a penalty corner was awarded and the home side’s Sophie George made no mistake in opening the scoring.
This was followed by two expertly delivered goals from Katryn Tucker – the first again scored from a penalty corner; while the other resulted from very skilful stick work as she manoeuvred the ball around opposition players, finally pulling the ball across from her left side to sweep the ball to the backboard.
Going into the half time break three goals up gave the home side a comfortable cushion to face the beginning of the second half.
But the visitors were not to be underestimated and came out all guns blazing to try to equalise; which they began to do in short order when one of their players defeated the Honiton defence to put the ball over the goal line.
However, no further goals could be scored by them and two more were scored by Honiton when again Kat Tucker, swiftly followed by Amy Phillips, managed to secure the final home team goals – both off penalty corners.
Indeed it seemed to be a game of numerous penalty corners this weekend – with considerable success arising from them!
Another great result for Honiton. Player of the Match: Amy Phillips
