Honiton ladies edged out by Plymouth in Top Club semi-finals

There has never been a Top Club Trophy for ladies in Devon, so this season the Honiton club donated a cup and stipulated it be for a new five discipline Top Club Competition, writes Tony Broughton.

This has been well received and the last four clubs recently played off for the finals spots at Honiton.

In the morning Sidmouth played Torquay United. The 2 wood singles, played first, was very close, but in the last few ends Bev Ryland, Torquay, got the better of Anne Capon 17-13. In the 4-wood singles Jean Brimson had to contend with Torquay’s on form Carey Hadfield, almost 60 years her junior, losing 21-10. With two out of five games gone the pressure was on Sidmouth for the last three.

In the rinks, Pat Ashton-Pritchard, Sue Mison, Evelyn Clements and Eileen Hewett played magnificently and won convincingly 25-12 and in the Pairs Paddy Chew and Zena Johnson did exceptionally well to beat top Devon duo Roz Coombes and Terry Kennard 18-14. But the triples had a tough time and finally lucked out, but overall a great performance by the East Devon Club against a very strong Torquay side.

In the afternoon Honiton played their jinks club Plymouth. It did not fare well from the start when Julie Grant playing Kathy Holmes in the two woods looked all the way a winner then on the 21st end it slipped away. With all four bowls within inches of the jack Julie dropped a single to lose 16-14. However Carole Binmore, always reliable, beat Sarah Quayle 21-16 in the 4 wood single so now one each.

In the pairs Rosemary Hirons and Shirley Hiscocks were ahead by a small margin most of the game in the Pairs but on the 20th end dropped a five to go 4 down on the game. They won a three on the last end losing the game by one shot, most unfortunate.

The triples of Lynda Dommett, Ann Hillyear and Pearl Hackwood were under pressure from the beginning and lost 24-13.

The fours of Yvonne Rayner, Dulcie Broughton, Joan Heard and Sue Evans were also in trouble from the start some 14 shots down two-thirds through, but they rallied well to come back to within four shots. Holding three on the 19th end to get within one shot for the final two ends Aileen Hodsoll, the Plymouth Skip who had played brilliantly throughout, drew shot to dash the Honiton hopes to leave Plymouth the 21-17 victors.

Plymouth now play Torquay in the final at Honiton on April 13.
