Honiton men net a little honour as Seaton men are defeated

PUBLISHED: 08:23 02 July 2014

A rather disappointing start to the week had three ladies’ triples going to Seaton and losing 42-73, writes Tony Broughton.

A little honour was retrieved when the men played the Seaton men in the County Trophy on Tuesday evening.

The home leg won one and lost one at 14-25 and 24-16, whilst the away leg did the same at 25-28 and 15-16, but winning the match by 78-75 and getting the lion’s share of the points.

The ladies continue their good run in the National Top Club Competition when they played Hemyock on Saturday morning winning three out of the four disciplines.

Carole Binmore won the Singles, Yvonne Rayner and Shirley Hiscocks won the Pairs, Dulcie Broughton, Brenda Harris, Carol Smith and Julie Grant won the Fours, but Joan Heard, Lynda Dommett and Sue Evans lost the Triples.

Later that day the club held it’s Charity Day match with all proceeds generated going to this year’s nominated charity, Hospiscare.

Fifty-six people turned up for the day that started with a Round Robin competition, the theme being Lady’s Day at the Races.

The majority of players turned up dressed in some kind of horse racing orientated fancy dress and the whole afternoon and match was a great success. The winner of the competition and perpetual trophy which had been donated by Mr S E D Fortescue was Keith Parsons, with the runner-up being Daphne Courtnay.

The ladies then laid on an absolutely super tea of sandwiches, cream teas, all sorts of cakes and more strawberries and cream.

This was followed by an evening of Horse Racing and in all the day raised £265. This brings the total already raised so far this Season to around £500.

Good fortune continued on Sunday when four mixed triples from Broadclyst came to Honiton and were squarely beaten 81-54. June Lee, Di Hawkins and Mike Critchley won 30-11. One triple won 19-9, but the other two lost narrowly by one shot each.

Unfortunately this was not the same for the four rinks that travelled to Culm Vale for a Two Counties League match played at the same time which ended up with all four rinks losing.
