Honiton bowlers close in Division Two promotion berth

16:28 11 March 2014

Four rinks of mostly outdoor bowlers came up from Newton Abbot for a friendly match this week and departed with an impressive 88-67 victory writes Tony Broughton.

The best home rink was the one of Joan Mackintosh, Maureen Parsons, Mike Critchley and Keith Parsons, who won 28-20.

Four days later and a visit of three rinks from Madeira resulted in a modest home win, 49-46.

The two winning home rinks were the ones of; Eileen Dommett, Ian McKenzie, Bernard Tonkin and Gerry Dommett (17-13) and D Hawkins, Barry Randall, Geoff Sanders and Marian Vessey (20–16). The other rink lost by five shots.

Honiton men were engaged in a close encounter against South Hams from Kingsbridge. In the away leg Scot Eveleigh, Terry House, Mike Dart and Phil Spreadbury had a thrilling game that saw the teams all square at 20 ends. On the last end the shot just slipped from their grasp and they went down 17-16.

Phil’s son James did a lot better; ably assisted by Peter Goodwin, Ken Clarke and Kieran Daniels, they won 24-8.

At home it was a case of feast or famine with Ian Veitch, Roger Binmore, Kevin Lovering and Steve Dommett winning 26-17 and Wally Heard, Keith Parsons, Tony Tooley and Trevor Pipe losing 12-32.

Nevertheless a good overall win of 78-74 gives Honiton top points and hold them close to the top of Division Two and the possibility of promotion is still on the agenda!

Last, but certainly not least this past week, Rosemary Hirons, Ann Hillyear and Pearl Hackwood took one step nearer to the finals of the Ladies County Triples this week by beating a strong Sidmouth side of Pat Harvey, Ann Capon and Jill Bishop 17-15.
