Archant

A good result this week in our Two Counties League fixture against the Hemyock Club played at Honiton, writes Tony Broughton.

Yvonne Rayner, Wally and Joan Heard with Trevor Pipe skipping had the top spot with a 30-12 win added to two further winning rinks of 16-14 and 20-15 with only one loss of 14-17 gave Honiton an overall win of 70-58.

The ladies had real bad luck in the last stages of the National Top Club competition playing against Kings, Torquay played on the King’s green which is noted for being difficult to play.

Nevertheless the Honiton girls won two out of four disciplines meaning the match was decided by total shots scored and in the count up Honiton lost by five shots!

The winners were Brenda Harris, Lynda Dommett and Sue Evans in the triples and Carole Binmore beat Natalie Melmore in the singles. Natalie is one of the players chosen to represent England at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

This is not the first time Carole has beaten Natalie in singles competitions, in fact having played her on numerous occasions has never lost to her!

Carole and Sue Evans continue their charge forward to Leamington and the National Championship Finals, both have already secured their places by respectively winning Group A and B of the County Two Wood competition.

They will represent Devon at the Finals and on their return play each other for the County Champions position, but it does mean Honiton is assured of at least one Ladies County Champion this season.

Sue has also booked her place in the finals in the Four Wood Championship and will also play Helen Northey, the Cornwall challenger, in the Champion of Champions competition this Sunday for another place at Leamington.

The other player representing Devon in the Four Wood is Natalie Melmore, Sue and she will play for top County place in September.

Sue and Carole together were extremely unlucky to lose in the Quarter Final of the Pairs after dropping one shot on an extra end.

Not happy with all that, on Wednesday two rinks travelled to South Molton to play Bideford in the Interclub competition and won the match putting them into the County semi-final.

The players were Lynda Dommett, Carole Smith, Julie Grant and Shirley Hiscocks (27-7) and Yvonne Rayner, Dulcie Broughton, Carole Binmore and Sue Evans (15-15).

They now play Topsham in the Semi-Final and hopefully then through to the final all on August 24 at Shaldon.

In the men’s Over-60s action there were victories for all three teams. The A and B sides both won the two rinks gaining the maximum eight points and the C side lost one rink banking six out of the eight points on offer.

Six rinks went to Marldon on Saturday to play a match in glorious sunshine, but lost on four of them and the match was also lost 109-88. despite the defeat they were all made most welcome and it was enjoyed by all.

The successful Honiton rinks were; Di Hawkins, Barrie Singleton, Thelma Flynn and Tony Broughton (27-9) and Doug Hirons, Anne Newman, Dick Summers and Scott Eveleigh, one of Devon’s brightest 16-year-old prospects, 20-14.

Finally, on Sunday, Tony Broughton and Berry Maynard played host to 48 club members on this year’s Captain’s Day.

They played a drawn round-robin match of 16 ends and were then treated to a tea as an act of appreciation from the Captains.

Winners of the competition were; for the men, Bill Nicholls, and for the ladies’ Daphne Courtney.

A raffle held for the benefit of Hospice Care, this year’s nominated charity raised £90.
