Paul Cayless, Chairman of South Devon Golf clubs discussed an idea some two years ago with his secretary, Mike Davis, of having an end of season competition involving all five winners of the Devon leagues.
After many phone calls, emails and organisation the first competition took place last weekend.
The five Devon League winners pitched up at Stover GC to play a friendly team competition.
Honiton joined Yelverton, Saunton, Okehampton and Dainton Park golf clubs in a better ball competition with six pairs from each club and the format being the best five scores from the six to count to determine an eventual winner.
Honiton were run away winners with a combined score of 203 points, with Saunton coming second with 187 points.
Andy Ford, Honiton team captain, received the new trophy, donated by Paul Cayless, and thanked all players for attending this new event.
The best pair of the day was the partnership of Barry Dunn and Stuart Selway (Honiton), with a score of 43 points, with Mark Gillard and Mike Williams (Honiton) runners up with 42 points.
Paul Cayless thanked Stover GC for giving up their course for the event, and presenting it in such excellent condition after the bad weather in recent days.
He also thanked Mike Davis, SDGC secretary and the other league secretary’s, for their hard work in bringing the event together.
In closing he announced that the East Devon league will host the 2014 event and wished them well.
