The annual matchplay battle for the dreaded wooden spoon between the ladies’ and men’s sections had been going far too well for the ladies in recent years.
Having to give two courtesy shots and allowing the ladies to play off their own card made life very difficult for the men’s section, so to winkle out a win was positively outstanding by club captain Paul Dimond’s team.
Winning by six and two was almost unthinkable. But Dimond seems to have finally got the rub of the green and insisted that I report the game in full. However, I think a photo of lady captain Jackie Seager with the infamous wooden spoon in her arms will be worth those ‘thousand’ words.
●A large field played in the very popular Treble Six Format for this week’s Mixed Competition. Once again, Honiton welcomed regular Country Members from Wales who play in the Mixed when they are down in the West Country.
The winners this week with 40pts were lady captain Jackie Seager and Max Pipe. Second place, with 37pts ocb were Dot Grove and Paul Witton with 37pts. Third place losing out ocb were Jan Dickinson and Paul Ritchie.
Fourth placed were Country Member Carole Jones playing with Terry Dimond. This month’s organisers are Linda and John Northover and the prizes were presented by lady captain Jackie.
●Sixty eight seniors turned out to play a Stableford round for the Ken Fordie Trophy but despite the good conditions, the scoring was not particularly high.
The trophy was won by Stan Squire who topped Division One with 40 points. Mike Kent came second with 38 points and behind him came Ted Chandler, Peter Shepherd and John Dickinson. The Second Division was won by Mike Jones with 38 points followed by Norman Runciman, Brian Morrison, Bill Eaton and John Foster.
