Honiton Texas Scramble success for Noar, Gillard and Phillips

21:14 08 January 2014

Archant

It came as a complete and not all together welcome surprise to the members to find the Honiton course was open for a post-Christmas Texas Scramble, writes Andy Wagner.

As we had all experienced high winds and horizontal rain over the last week we expected to see uprooted trees and lakes instead of fairways!

However, the greens staff had beavered away to produce a very attractive course and what turned out to be a very mild morning. The Texas Scramble format meant poor scores were ‘everybody’s’ fault and the ‘five drives each’ ruling meant it was ‘squeaky bum’ time right to the last hole for some players (especially me).

We played off 10 per cent of the team’s combined handicap which left in first place Dan Noar, Mark Gillard and Jake Phillips with a nett 58.1.

Second were Stewart Slater, Derek Richards and Dean Bonetta with 60.5 and Alan Devenny, Mike O’Reilly and Peter Clarke third with 62.2.

All in all it proved to be a very enjoyable end to a year of fun and camaraderie at Honiton Golf Club.
