Nick Payne, County Angling Officer for Devon and Cornwall is aiming to provide opportunities for young talent to access high quality coaching so as to develop their potential to compete successfully at regional, national and, perhaps, international level.

A big part of this role is to encourage and assist clubs to attain “Club Mark” accreditation, a Sport England quality award that enables clubs to access grants and bursaries more easily. Critically, it provides an assurance to parents and others that the club has proper systems for coaching and supporting youngsters in the sport, has adopted and is applying, formal safeguarding and equality procedures to its activities.

If anyone would like more information about angling or if clubs are interested in finding out more about the benefits of “Club Mark”, Nick can be contacted on 07850 774857 and via email nick.payne@anglingdevelopmentboard.org.uk

Nick has launched the Devon Angling Development Forum which brings together all three disciplines of the sport - sea, coarse and game angling. The Forum is now working towards an ambitious programme of events and initiatives to improve angling in Devon. This will include local contributions to National Fishing Month (20 July -27 August) and giving youngsters the chance to try fly fishing at the Devon Games to Inspire on 30 June at Okehampton. The group meets every couple of months all over Devon, hopefully enabling many to get involved.

Going forward, the Forum will be developing its plans to specifically engage and support sea anglers, rolling out Club Mark, increasing opportunities for more to try out fishing, as well as measures to bring lapsed ’thirtysomething’ anglers back to the sport.

Nick said “Easter is a time when many of us start to think about doing more outdoors. Devon is one of the best places in the country to get in to angling with many high quality venues in all areas of the sport which are readily accessible to everyone.”
